Commonwealth Games 2018: Indian men’s hockey team to kick-start their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan

According to the schedule announced by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Tuesday, Asian champions India are placed in a relatively easy but tricky Pool B alongside Pakistan, last edition’s bronze medallists England, Malaysia and Wales. Five-time champions and hosts Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Scotland feature in Pool A.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team have been clubbed in Pool A, which consists of current silver medallists England, South Africa, Malaysia and Wales.

Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2017: If event is to achieve results, it must get over Ivanka Trump obsession

The bangle-seller was extra eager to bring out the special piece his artisans had crafted. Mohammed Waseem opened the packaging carefully, almost as if to prolong the suspense. On display was a glittering piece, studded with stones that read ‘Ivanka’. Sitting at his store at Lad Bazaar by the Charminar, Waseem wished Ivanka would take the time to go bangle-shopping so that he could get an opportunity to gift her the Ivanka bangles.

The gesture gives you a sense of what the Global Entrepreneurship Summit is all about. Much to the discomfiture of many officials in the organising party, the GES 2017, being organised for the first time in South Asia, has become more about Ivanka and less about the 1500 entrepreneurs who are attending the summit.

“This is not the way we had envisaged it,” said an official on condition of anonymity, “The media too is more interested in writing about the designer who created Ivanka’s dress for the inauguration rather than what this global meeting of entrepreneurs, most of them women, could mean.”

The inside story of how Hyderabad won the race, received a further endorsement when Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his inaugural speech spoke of the summit as a connection between Silicon Valley and Hyderabad. That won’t be music to Bengaluru’s ears because India’s IT capital has worn the unofficial tag of being India’s Silicon Valley for a long time.

What GES 2017 does is to give a fillip to Hyderabad and India’s youngest state that is also joint number one with Andhra Pradesh in the Ease of Doing Business rankings. Showcasing its T-Hub — that is an ecosystem that mentors start-ups, Hyderabad has gained the reputation of being an innovation hub. And the city got a thumbs up from Ivanka Trump herself when she said that Hyderabad’s tech centres may even outshine the city’s world famous biryani. That was after Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, as the host, asked everyone to relish the Hyderabadi biryani during their visit.

‘There is a uniqueness about Kohli’

He was also the fastest to score 8,000 ODI runs — and by scoring 1,460 runs in ODIs so far in 2017, Rajneesh pointed out, Kohli’s tally is now the highest for any captain in a calendar year. Ricky Ponting, the great Australian batsman, held the previous record.

Kohli’s six ODI hundreds are also the most by a captain in a calendar year, beating the record of five centuries by Sourav Ganguly and Ponting.

Ironically, those feats came hours after Rahul Dravid told an audience at the Bengaluru Lit Fest that he ‘cringed’ when he heard Kohli’s comments before a series.

‘Virat sometimes comes across as outrageous, and I cringe on reading his statements before a series. But if he can bring the best out of himself by needling the opposition, so be it,’ Dravid told a discussion about Rajdeep Sardesai’s new book Democracy XI, moderated by our former colleague Prem Panicker.

Unlike Dravid or Sachin Tendulkar or V V S Laxman whose achievements on the cricket pitch were accompanied by an absence of drama, everything Kohli does on the field has aggression as an accomplice.

Which may be why Kohli does not quite attract the same unqualified adoration from the cricketing public that Tendulkar did and still does. Even those awestruck by Kohli’s genius, his athleticism, his reverence for the game are sometimes put off by what they view as his arrogance.

What are Modi’s plans to stop future black money?

The world is fretting over Donald Trump winning the mandate to lead the US for the next four years. But we Indians are preoccupied with an issue that is much more local. To paraphrase a well-worn saying, ‘local’ is all politics. So is the sudden demonetisation of high denomination currency notes.

Demonetisation is the act of a government declaring that a currency or some of its components are no longer legal tender. As a consequence the citizens can no longer exchange it for anything of value.

On the face of it this can be draconian since the poor have no assets other than a few rupees to fall back on. What do they do if those rupees are declared worthless?

The rich have many other assets to fall back on. They do not live a hand-to-mouth day-to-day existence.

Demonetisation, as with inflation, recession, stagnation, unemployment etc, affects the poor disproportionately.

How SBI plans to retain its competitive edge

State Bank of India (SBI) will assess executives’ competencies, craft individual development plans and provide 360-degree feedbacks to its top management to ensure the lender has a competitive advantage.

The country’s largest lender is hiring an advisor for this exercise.

A 360-degree feedback for top executives is the need of the hour to help them understand the perception gap, said sources.

t would ensure that employees and peers give feedback on the subject of the assessment.

A senior SBI executive said with the “merger of associate banks giving us scale, the focus is now on enhancing human resources capacity”.

The top management – which includes the chairman, managing directors, deputy managing directors and chief general managers – drives the lender’s key initiatives, serves as change agents and also acts as mentors.

In this backdrop, the bank would like to assess key competencies required for a successful leader and devise individual development plans, another SBI executive said.

The time frame for the project is five months. The bank is aiming at completing the process by the end of March 2018.

The bank is also working on a three-year business plan, nearly coinciding with the time its new chairman Rajnish Kumar would be in the corner office. Kumar took charge in October 2017.

Students in MP will now have to answer roll call with ‘Jai Hind’

Madhya Pradesh Education Minister Vijay Shah on Monday said that students in government schools would now have to respond with ‘Jai Hind’ during attendance call.

“From now, in government schools during attendance call, students will reply with ‘Jai Hind’ instead of ‘Yes sir’ or ‘Yes Madam’. This will instill a sense of patriotism among the youth,” Shah told reporters in Bhopal.

“I don’t think anyone will have an objection to it,” Shah added.

In September, the Education Minister had passed a similar order for all schools in the state’s Satana district, with effect from October 1.

At the time, he had also stated that that if this mission is successful, he would take approval from Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and request to implement this rule all over Madhya Pradesh, whether it’s a public school or a private school.  — ANI
