Allopanishad

Allopanishad is a pseudo upanishad which purportedly injected among valid upanishads. Sri Aurobindo, Dayananda Saraswati and Swami Vivekananda ruled out the validity of Allopanishad (ALLA+UPANISHAD) by citing ‘Mukthikopanishad’ which endorses the list of 108 valid upanishds.

They have claimed that this must have been written during Akbar regime when he started Din Illa-hi religion(mixture of Hinduism and Islam) which couldn’t attract people.

Akbar grand son Dara Shikoh was an avid reader of Upanishads and Vedanta who concluded and supported the similarities between Islam’s oneness of god and Vedanta’s Brahma description. He has translated 50 Upanishads in Persian with the help of acclaimed  poet Jaganath Pandit.

The Upanishads are many, and said to be one hundred and eight, but some declare them to be still larger in number. Some of them are evidently of a much later date, as for instance, the Allopanishad in which Allah is praised and Mohammed is called the Rajasulla. I have been told that this was written during the reign of Akbar to bring the Hindus and Mohammedans together, and sometimes they got hold of some word, as Allah, or Illa in the Samhitâs, and made an Upanishad on it.

So in this Allopanishad, Mohammed is the Rajasulla, whatever that may mean. There are other sectarian Upanishads of the same species, which you find to be entirely modern, and it has been so easy to write them, seeing that this language of the Samhitâ portion of the Vedas is so archaic that there is no grammar to it

– Swami Vivekananda in ‘Lectures from Colombo to Almora’

~ If you have not read the Atharva Veda, come to us and look through its pages from beginning to end, or you may go to any person who knows that book and read with him all the verses given in its twenty chapters. You will never find the name of your Prophet in it.

And as regards Allopanishad it is not given in the Atharva Veda or in its ancient commentary, called the Gopath Braahama or in any of its Shaakhaas (branches). We surmise that some one wrote it in the reign of the Emperor Akbar. Its author appears to have been a man who knew a little of Sanskrit and Arabic, because in its text both Sanskrit and Arabic words occur. For example, the Arabic words Asmallam Ille and the Sanskrit words Mitra and Varuna occur in the above passage and the same is seen throughout the whole book.

– Swami Dayananda in ‘Satyartha Prakash

Some of the Upanishads are, no doubt, quite modern, for mention is made even of an Allahupanishad.

Max Muller in ‘Upanishads’ Page lxvii

Pandit Satyabrata Samasrami mentions even an Allopanishad, or the Upanishad of Allah, the shameless production of some sycophant of the Mussalman rulers of India.

–  Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, poet of Vandematram in ‘Bankim Racanavali’ lll:l68

In the days of Akbar an Upanishad was again composed with the object of converting Hindus into Musulmans — and it was called Allopanishad. How strange !.

Devendra Nath Tagore (father of Rabindra Nath Tagore and Brahma Samaj pioneer) in  The autobiography of Maharshi Devendranath Tagore

On the occasion of Akbar Badshah’s coronation, these Yogis recited Allopanishad in vedic metres and blessed him. His favourite Queen Devi Choudharani recited these mantras while doing Tulsi Puja, praying for his long life.

Indian literature: Volume 41 , page 175, Sahitya Academy

Allopanishad Alläsüktam  probably the work of a Hindu converted to Islam.

Albrecht Weber, famous German Indologist, in  ‘Indische Streifen, eine Sammlung von bisher in Zeitschriften ( Indian Strip, a collection of far smaller papers in journals)’

Some upanishads are written by self-seeking Brahminism as demanded by expediency and when emperor Akbar was toying with the idea of a new religion Dil-Il- Adi, the Brahmins had written for him, a new upanishad called Allopanishad.

S. N. Sadasivan in ‘A social history of India’  –Page 178

Even the contention that a certain Allopanishad, pointing to a Vedic reference of Allah and the prophet Mohammed, is authoritative is shown to be a falsification.

Allopanishad Islamic Works Allopanishad, also known as Alia Upanisad, is a celebrated work of Sanskrit literature. It was written by a Hindu courtier (16th Century) of Emperor Akbar, which was an apocryphal chapter of the Atharvaveda.

Texts called “Upanishads” continued to appear up to the end of the British rule in 1947. The Akbar Upanishad and Allah Upanishad are examples having been written in the 17th century, at the instance of Darah Shikoh, in praise of Islam

    – Harry Oldmeadow   in  ‘Light from the East: Eastern Wisdom                           for  the Modern West’ – Page 37

Some count up to 200 Upanishads, others up to 100. Barth says that the number of the Upanishads may go up to 250, including the Allah Upanishad that was composed at the time of Akbar

      – Anthony Elenjimittam in ‘The Upanishads: Isa, Katha,

Mundaka, Mandukya’  Page 10

Over the centuries, new upanishads have been composed. Thus, for example, in the 17th century the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan’s Son wanted an Upanishad to be written dedicated to Allah, the Islamic nomenclature for God. This gave rise to the Allopanishad.

  1. seems akbar was much fascinated towards hinduism. not a single history book which i referred has ever described in detail.. about the din Illa hi concept. people know it only as a form of addressing the emperor. akbar’s efforts to maintain secularism and peace during his reign are innovative and commendable… a very very rare fact.. many thanx to kalyan chandra.

  2. Nice exploration about history of quite interesting topics of Hinduism ,,
Your blogs will help full to feel excitement of who are passionate on different ideas innovative .. keep it up more and thanx to kalyan ..

  3. Thanks to Maha Yogi Shri Aurobindo and Swami Dayananda Saraswati of Arya Samaj for clarification on the psuedo Upanishad written by some Muslim Scholar probably a missionary who learnt little bit Sanskrit along with Arabic who prepared and misinterpreted his concept for inimical purpose on Hinduism, now-e-days some Islamic Scholors are misutilising it to convert Hindus to Islam. Truth always triumpts. Om Tat Sat.

  4. @Ramesh The Shakti we call India, Bhavani Bharati, is the living unity of the Shaktis of three hundred million people; It is this, that in every one of these three hundred millions of men, from the Raja on his throne to the coolie at his labour, from the Brahmin absorbed in his Sandhya to the Pariah walking shunned of men,GOD LIVETH. We are all gods and creators, because the energy of God is within us and all life is creation;- Sri Aurobindo

  5. Mahatma Gandhi is not a well known academician on Hinduism or Indology..Coming to the Upanishads, there are huge number of Upanishads which are later injected..

Shankara chary recognised and propagated 10 Upanishads which are called as dasopanishads.. Another interesting aspect is numerous aranyakas and upansihads bear same name.. The citations which you have said, infact they are numerous, are flawed and based on western indology experts…

  6. If the word ‘Allah’ is familiar in Hindu Upanishads, the term would have been highlighted in Vedic literature..

Why we could not see the ‘term allah’ in samhithas and Brahmanas..

Yes, numerous pseudo upanishads have been injected to traditional vedic litt, of them ‘Allopanishad’ is one..

While the other pdeudo upanishads have tried to imitate the established Upanishads, Allopanishad has tried to establish new connection to Allah by poetic jugglery of words.

Darashiko has started translation of Upanishads to persian language with the help of Jaganath Pandit, in the year 1567. Allopanishad must have been written during those era, most of the scholar opine.

Recently, Zakir Naik, made another allegation claiming Bhavishya purana has citations on Mohammed Propeth..

Agniveer, vedic scholar from Arya Samaj, ridiculed such allegations..  You can go through the following link..

  7. Similar to the Puruśa Sūkta of the Atharvaveda Jājalā Śākhā (solitary, accented manuscript at Baroda) as the one and only hymn of Jājalā Samhitā that exists in our era; similar to Nīlarudrasūkta as a sūkta (hymn) of the Atharvaveda Paippalāda Śākhā and exist not in Śaunakīya Saṁhitā, but Nīlarudrasūkta gets testimony from the 49th Atharvaveda Pariśiṣṭa (Caraṇavyūha) as an Upanisad (Nīlarudra Upaniṣad or Nīlarudropaniṣad). Nīlarudra Upaniṣad (Nilārudropaniṣad) of Paippalāda Saṁhitā is mentioned on Caraṇavyūha and Dīpikā only, but mentioned not on Muktikā Upaniṣad (Muktikopaniṣad); and Allā-Upaniṣad or Allopaniṣad also does exist out from Muktikopaniṣad, Caraṇavyūha, and Dīpikā.

  8. @Dhamma

During the Moghul regime, numerous poets have tried to trace ‘allah’ and ‘Mohammad’ in vedic scriptures.Allopanishad is a mere manipulative materialisation in  their deliberate attempt.

I have already said, mukthikopaniad says there art 108 upanishads. But, mukthilopanishad is not among the dasopanishads which explained by Shankaracharya and Ramanuja charya.  But, in vedic libraries, we can find 230+ Upanishads. All of them are later injected from 8th-19th centuries by shaivas, vaishnavas and shaktas in competing themselves..

  9. Another example is , RK muth and Aurobindo ashram also published small booklets with the name of  ‘ramakrishnopanishad’ and ‘Aurobindopanishad’. people may accept them due to their immense reverence and love towards the great rishis, that doesnt mean they are valid upanishads…

  10. I have already said that according to Pandit Tārānātha Tarkavācaspati Bhaṭṭācārya in his great lexicon “Vāchaspatya” (a Sanskrit Lexicon of 5442 pages) and Raja Rādhā Kānta Deva Bahadur in his famous dictionary “Shabda-Kalpadrum”, that Allaḥ Sūkta is a hymn in Atharvaveda, Ādi Sūkta (First/Chief Hymn), a celebrated Vedic Hymn.”Shabda-Kalpadrum” is a well known Sanskrit lexicon compiled by a few Bengali scholars at the instance of Raja Rādhā Kānta Deva Bahadur of Bengal. In this book, the words have been analyzed into their base-forms and suffixes, their genders determined and their Sanskrit synonyms noted. According to the first Indian President of The Asiatic Society and one of the pioneers of the Indian Renaissance Rajendralal Mitra, Bábu Harischandra of Benares has a manuscript that bears the title of “Allā-Upaniṣad”, and it professes to be a chapter of the Pippaláda Sákhá of the Atharva Veda.

    Raja
Vijayagovinda Sinha from Purnia, Maharaja Madanamohana from Vishnupura, Pandit
Radhakrishna from the court of Maharaja Ranajita Sinha, and Pandit Vitthala
Sastri from “Benares College”, who have agreed about the authority of Allopaniṣad
on Shabda-Kalpadrum.Do you think the eminent Pandits above make a falseness or joke in his religion? Nay, they made testimonial laike that because they do believe in his religion.

  11. What about the plethora of citations and references  of great philosophers and historians, who say Allopanishad is a manipulative work of Mughal poets..

People may have recited alla suktha during vasanthothsav, that doesnt mean it is ancient. This tendency have started from Mughals, why we could not see recitation of ala suktha/allopanishad prior to Mughal era ??

Some historians say, Allopanishad or Akbaropanidhad intension was to say Akbar as messenger of Allah..

Allopanishad Islamic Works Allopanishad, also known as Alia Upanisad, is a celebrated work of Sanskrit literature. … Akbar is described as a messenger of God and a prophet rasul, but not Alrasul.

    Source : http://books.google.com/books?id=VGxKTDT0h2kC&pg=PA40&dq=allopanishad+akbar+messenger&hl=en&ei=9j1oTtWzBI-HrAfgyrjYCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CDQQ6AEwAQ

As far as I kow, propeth is the last messenger. This Upanishad is against to the foundations of Hindu vedic literature and Islamic sentiments. It’s intention was to praise Akbar by calling him as messenger of Allah…

This pseudo Upanishad must be written by Hindu converted to Islam, who has mediocre proficiency in Urdu and Sanskrit..

  12. Do you think the eminent Pandits above make a falseness or joke in his
religion? Nay, they made testimonial laike that because they do believe
    in his religion. //

I did not mean to say, they did intentionally. They must not have done a proper research literally and historically..

For example. Mahathma Gandhi. He is a great freedom fighter, but, he is not a hindu scholar. He doesn’t even have basics in Indian philosophy and religion..

Rahupati Raghava Raja Ram song, written by Puluskar in the last century, is also sung by hindus in various festivals including Guru Purnami, Satyanarayana Swami Vratham and Sri Rama Navami etc..

It  has a reference of ‘Allah’ in the song, Shall we attribute it as ancient..

  13. Have you forgot that the word “Alla” is as ancient as the Astadhyayi of Panini? Don’t you know that the Vedic word ”
    Īlaḥ ” does exist
in the Nirukta of Yaska? Have you known that the Vedic word

Ilāḥ ” in which similar to the one of the God’s name in Arabic language does exist in Rig Veda?

    Rigweda
    10.101.1:

    úd
    budhyadhvaṁ sámanasaḥ
    sakhāyaḥ
    sám
    agním indhvam bahávaḥ sánīlā

  14. See the differences among the statements from the scholar above who make an opinion on the falseness of Allopanishad. While the statements and the facts that agree with the authenticity of Allopanishad do not make contrast among them. What will you believe in, just your presumption?

  15. Swamiji, Rajendralala Mitra, dan Aurobindo Ghose meyakini bahwa Allopaniṣad adalah karya seorang cendekiawan muslim mughal pada era Akbar the Great.- Allopaniṣad diyakini adalah karya seorang Penyair terkenal abad ke-17 masehi bernama Jagannātha Paṇḍitarāja (1590 – 1665).-Allopaniṣad diyakini merupakan karya seorang pandit Hindu pada era Akbar the Great. (Lok Sabha Secretariat. 1955. Lok Sabha debates, Bagian 2,Volume 4, halaman 7345. India: Parliament. Lok Sabha.-Allopaniṣad adalah Upanisad yang ditulis atas permintaan sang putra Kaisar Shah Jahan, yaitu pangeran Dara Shikoh di abad ke-17 masehi. (Glimpses of Indian Heritage, halaman 70, oleh Raman Varadara)Who can we believe among the satements above?

  16. In “Hindi Vishva Kosh”, The Encyclopaedia Indica by Nagendranath Vasu
and compiled by renowned scholars of Hindi, second volume, written that Allopaniṣad
is a sūkta (hymn) that praising Parameśvara and
“Allā/Allaḥ” is the name of Parameśvara or Brahmā.

  17. Ilāḥ ” in which similar to the one of the God’s name in Arabic language does exist in Rig Veda?  ///

Ila is an androgyne in Hindu
mythology, known for his/her sex changes. As a man, he is known as Ila
(Sanskrit: इल) or Sudyumna and as a woman, is called Ilā (Sanskrit:
इला). Ilā is considered the chief progenitor of the Lunar Dynasty
(Somavamsha) of Indian kings – also known as the Ailas (“descendants of
    Ilā”).

  18. Don’t forget that in Atharvaveda there is one and only hymn which is devoted to
“Idā/Ilā/Allā”, that is, Atharvaveda Kānda VII Sūkta 27 Mantra 1:

idaivāsmām anu vastām vratena yasyāh pade punate devayantah               ghtapadī sakvarī somapsthopa yajnam asthita vaisvadevī”

  19. Namaste, i am here just want to give the more facts about Allopanishad without make it should be accepted for those who do not believe in it. It does not matter for every one to believe in it or not, no compulsion. I just sad because the facts as long as i read in all websites on internet just giving the con fact about it without giving also the pro fact, so that we can know the true “status” of the Upanishad in the heart of Sastra without any hesitation to believe in it as a falseness or believe in its authority. Salam.

  20. Kalyan Chandra,The original “Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram” bhajan has this line:”Ishwar Shankar Tero Naam”Gandhi willfully plagiarised and distorted this line to “Ishwar allah Tero Naam”.
